It aims at bringing together top African businesses, investors, presidents, policymakers, the press, and NGOs to celebrate and recognise torch-bearing companies and entrepreneurs in Africa. In any given economy, SMEs are the largest employers, and in emerging markets, particularly, they represent the best hope for a nation to achieve economic growth and social stability through the creation of worthwhile, sustainable employment. The long-term aim of Pioneers of Prosperity is to turn these companies into powerful role models that will inspire the next-generation of African business leaders and COW-F entrepreneurs Legatum are joined as partners in the program by the OTF Group and the S.E.VEN Fund, which share Legatum's commitment of enterprise based solutions to reduce poverty, and which developed the rigorous and transparent selection framework upon which the applicants were evaluated. An international panel of leading business experts completed the judging process. The 2008 Award program builds on the success of the inaugural Legatum Pioneers of Prosperity Africa Award in 2007 which attracted over 450 firms from five countries in East Africa.
